Top tips for getting the most out of your WYSTC experience

David-ChapmanDavid Chapman, Director General of WYSE Travel Confederation – who was also a delegate at WYSTC from 2007 to 2012 – offers his top tips for how to get the most out of WYSTC 2015.

1. Develop your strategy

Think about what you want to get out of WYSTC 2015, and then plan your schedule accordingly.

Will your WYSTC experience be about making new connections and/or reaffirming existing ones? Are you looking to update your knowledge or be inspired by industry experts? Do you simply want to immerse yourself in the youth, student and educational industry for a few days? Or are you looking to achieve a combination of the above?

Whatever your plan, you can personalise your experience by choosing your ideal mix of business appointments, seminars, workshops and networking events from our comprehensive programme.

2. Ensure you have access to Marcom eSchedule PRO when it opens


What is Marcom eSchedule PRO? For those of you who haven’t been to WYSTC before, Marcom eSchedule PRO is a powerful online tool that helps you to find new business contacts and more importantly, lets new business contacts find you. You can then schedule appointments with these contacts either at your own booth if you choose to have one, or at an allocated table.

By prearranging your appointments you can always find the people you have arranged to meet.

Marcom eSchedule PRO opens on Tuesday, 28 July, so register now to ensure that you have access to the system as soon as it opens.

3. Research the educational sessions

Each year WYSTC hosts over 30 educational sessions – a combination of seminars and informal workshops. These sessions are presented by leading industry thinkers and leaders and can provide you with insights into new strategies and ideas for your business.

Plan ahead and decide which sessions you want to attend – if a particular session doesn’t appeal to you, you can open up these time slots in Marcom to accept more business appointments.


4. Don’t underestimate the power of the networking events

The networking events are not just an opportunity to unwind after a busy day at the conference, they are the ideal time to re-engage with people you have met during the day and to continue the conversations you started during business appointments – or indeed speaking to those delegates you haven’t been able to schedule meetings with.

Building relationships and trust is what helps to start successful relations with a new contact. We found that last year, more business was concluded in the bar than during the day!

5. Take a stand to showcase your business

Exhibition-hallNot only do booths provide a great advertising opportunity for your business and help to facilitate impromptu discussions with passing delegates, they also provide a base in which to

hold your business appointments. Why spend time going to meet delegates when they can come to you?

6. Book your hotel 

We’ve done the searching for you and have handpicked a number of hotels and hostels that offer great value for money, easy access to the conference venue and an all-round comfortable stay in Cape Town.

Don’t forget that booking a cheaper hotel a few miles away from the convention centre isn’t always as good value as it seems. You may have to get up earlier and then have to travel in to town.

In Cape Town we recommend that you always use a taxi and so, with getting changed for evening events etc, you could be looking at four or more trips per day, not to mention the loss of networking time whilst you are in a cab!

I recommend that you stay in the conference hotel – Southern Sun The Cullinan. It’s comfortable, the facilities are second-to-none and it’s less than a five minute walk to the CTICC. The hotel’s poolside bar will also play host to this year’s conference bar where a wealth of networking opportunities await you.day-tours
