Speaker: Dr Jackie Abell | Director of Research | African Lion Environmental and Research Trust (ALERT)
Wednesday, 23 September | 17:10 – 17:30
Captive cats have been in the news a lot recently. The newly released film on canned hunting has generated a lot of media attention, as well as the tragic events around the worlds’ most famous lion Cecil.
Volunteer organisations offering programmes that involve wild cats often attract negative (media) attention, as there is a lot of un-clarity in the general public. As a volunteer organisation that offers animal programmes you need to be prepared to answer questions from various angles. Surely you want to avoid the wrong partners on the ground to ensure you’re offering a responsible experience.
During this workshop Dr Jackie Abell will be presenting the guidelines developed by WYSE Work and Volunteer Abroad’s Volunteer Working Group on how a volunteer organisation can identify the right and the wrong partners on the ground when working with captive cats.
