WYSTC 2016 Local Volunteer Project

The local volunteer project has traditionally played a prominent role in the overall WYSTC journey, not only for delegates to experience volunteering and its different aspects, but importantly to contribute to the local host community.

The WYSTC 2016 local volunteer project is organised in collaboration with the Serbian branch of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Serbia has long been a stopover for refugees journeying into northern Europe, with an estimated 600,000 passing through in 2015.

The EU-Turkey agreement officially closed the migrant route through Serbia but hundreds of refugees continue to enter the country daily. Thousands of refugees remain in desperate need of shelter, food, water, medical supplies and other basic resources. One of the places where they can get this support is at the local refugee centre, which is in dire need of a makeover. Join WYSTC and the UNHCR to help make this happen.

DATE: Tuesday, 20 September

TIME: 09:00 – 12:00, the coach departs the Crowne Plaza at 08:30

VENUE: Miksaliste, Refugee aid Serbia

ACTIVITY: The local refugee center in Belgrade is in dire need of a makeover and welcomes WYSTC delegates to help with interior and exterior painting.

WHAT TO BRING: Wear old clothes and bring a water bottle.

Please note, there is only capacity for 50 WYSTC delegates to participate in the painting so participation is on a ‘first come, first served’ basis; no registration is required.

If you are not able to physically take part in the painting activity, you will be able to contribute in another way. We are encouraging all WYSTC 2016 delegates to “Pack for Humanity”. The various refugee centres in Serbia are in need of the below items, so if you have room in your suitcase, your generosity will be highly appreciated.

Suggested items:

  • Warm shoes and sneakers for women, men and children (especially teenagers and young children)
  • Underwear and socks
  • Backpacks
  • Clothes
  • Hygiene items such as tissue boxes, antibacterial gel, soap, etc
  • Children’s books, toys, arts & crafts items

Any of the above donations can be dropped off at the WYSTC Registration Desk
