Global trends in gap year travel

Wednesday, 21 September | 16:10-16:30

Jim Zambrano

Director, Brand Partnerships, StudentUniverse

230,000 young travelers in the UK take a gap year each year and have been doing so since the 1960’s; meanwhile, the concept started to gain ground amongst US students in the last few years in tandem with rising college tuition costs. What will Malia Obama’s gap year signal for the broader gap year market – will students perceive that they are only in reach for the 1%, or will that turbocharge a rise in popularity of the concept, and the term, in other parts of the world?

This session will focus on trends in the gap year market, specifically:

  • How interest in gap years have been growing, how students are spending them and where they are going
  • How to have an affordable gap year
  • The differences between gap year and work abroad
  • How travel companies should prepare to stay ahead of gap year trends
  • What StudentUniverse’s merger with GapYear.com Travel means for the student travel space and gap years in the UK.
