Distribution roundtable

Defining a new code of conduct for the youth travel accommodation industry

Thursday, 22 September | 13:20 – 14:00 | by invitation only

Moderator: Philip Houghton, CEO, Safestay

Against the backdrop of increasing consolidation of major Online Travel Agencies (OTAs), the workshop will discuss the current relationship between OTAs and accommodation providers. A white paper which summarizes the recent industry policy changes and positions of various youth travel accommodation providers will form the basis of the discussion. The goal of the discussion is to catch up on the current issues related to distribution channels in the industry, revise the Sydney Declaration*, and define a code of conduct that represents the opinion of the global youth travel accommodation industry in this fast changing landscape.

*Sydney Declaration:  Following a meeting of leading youth travel accommodation providers and associations at WYSTC 2013 in Sydney, a position statement was agreed upon regarding online distribution practices. Two years later, the so called “Sydney Declaration” was discussed during a meeting at WYSTC 2015 in Cape Town. During this meeting it was acknowledged that many of the issues remained unsolved while some progress had been made in terms of unfair business practices of OTAs. It has been agreed by the operators involved in the discussions of 2013 and 2015 to update the Sydney Declaration.
